The World Geoparks Network is a non-profit organization. The first geoparks network dates back to 2000 and is entirely European, in 2004 in Paris, the establishment of the Global Geopark Network, the first World Geoparks Network, was created by 17 European and 8 Chinese geoparks. In November 2015, on the occasion of the 38th Unesco general conference, geoparks become a new category of UNESCO sites. (UNESCO GLOBAL GEOPARKS). They are therefore defined open-air laboratories of development, management of the earth’s heritage, creating and exchanging collaborations and experiences through the network.<\/p>\n
Three fundamental objectives: Environment Conservation, Earth Sciences Education and promotion of sustainable economic development at local level. Any geopark is subject to a revalidation every 4 years which verifies the functioning and quality of the work performed by receiving a green card to confirm the validation or a yellow or red card for loss of status.<\/p>\n

A geopark that can be recognized internationally and inserted in a network of geoparks is the well-defined part of a territory that has a particular geological heritage closely linked to a sustainable development strategy. It will be large enough to contain a certain number of geological sites called geosites; the first heritage of the geopark. The geosites must have a particular scientific and aesthetic importance and rarity nature, as well as an archaeological, naturalistic and historical-cultural interest. All the sites present in the geopark territory must be networked and be part of a precise management to benefit from protection measures, enhancement and good political practices for sustainable development. The geopark area must ensure a positive impact and improve the living conditions of its inhabitants, in other words, it must be effective economic development of the area. In a geopark it\u2019s possible to become aware of the connection between human and nature in its geological component, understood to be a risk or to be a resource.<\/p>\n
